This sermon preached on 20 July 2014 by Pastor Joseph Prince was powerful and it spoke to me deeply.
As I listened to the CD, I thought of what would be a practical way to recall the sermon in the future.
So I decided that it would be best to come up with a visual summary for a quick overview.
This is my first attempt so please be kind.
I’ll also include text notes and do use the links below to jump to sections that interest you the most:

Sermon Summary: The Promise Of Protection – Truths From Psalm 91 (20 July 2014)
The sermon started off with Pastor Prince personally thanking a group of DARE youth for their practical evangelism and a prayer of comfort for the family members and loved ones of MH17 victims. Then he led the congregation to read Psalm 91 with one voice and one heart.
Thanks to DARE Youth for Practical Evangelism
Love: A group of DARE youth approached an old lady selling tissues with love and offered to buy her a meal.
Help: They bought her dinner and then went back to her house the next day went to clean it.
Shared Jesus: They led her to Christ and partook Holy Communion with her.
Prayer for Family Members of MH17 Victims
Father God, we come to You as a church and as Your people. Father, we remember this time, Lord, the loved ones and the family members of those on board MH17. Father, You are the God of all comfort, You can comfort us in ways that no man can. You can reach deep down Lord and touch all our hurting places. Touch these families, Lord I pray.
Father unveil Your love to them, bless them richly and bind up their broken hearts. Pour in the healing oil and reviving wine into their emotions. And let the balm of Gilead, our Lord Jesus Christ heal their hearts. Father, we thank You. Father, You are the God who comforts us in all our troubles.
In Jesus name, Amen.
Church Reading of Psalm 91 with One Voice & One Heart
He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.”
Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler And from the perilous pestilence. He shall cover you with His feathers, And under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler. You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, Nor of the arrow that flies by day, Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.
A thousand may fall at your side, And ten thousand at your right hand; But it shall not come near you. Only with your eyes shall you look, And see the reward of the wicked.
Because you have made the Lord, who is my refuge, Even the Most High, your dwelling place, No evil shall befall you, Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling; For He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you in all your ways. In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone. You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra, The young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot.
“Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known My name. He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him, And show him My salvation.”
The Power of Psalm 91
- Repeat Psalm 91 7 times: John G. Lake in the book The John G. Lake Sermons on Dominion over Demons, Disease and Death says that repeating Psalm 91 seven times a day makes the spirit of faith penetrate a person’s soul.
- Crownlets in Psalm 91: The Hebrew alphabet Zayin means “sword.” Eight Hebrew letters are special as they can have a “tagin” or crownlet attached. Rabbis say tagins are small Zayins and when Psalm 91 is recited, they function as spiritual weapons. (An Introduction To Ancient And Modern Hebrew by Al Garza (pages 43-47))
Psalm 91 protects against all evil (24/7): Diseases, destruction, arrows or missiles, devil’s traps, terror, plagues and much more…
Bonus: Parenting Tips
Note: Being a parent, I love it when Pastor Prince shares grace based parenting tips in his sermons.
* Don’t expose kids to horror movies.
* Children learn from imitating.
* What are they watching & reading?
* First, be a parent then be a friend.
* Kids don’t know what is best for them.
* Guide them, lead them, feed them, nourish them, love them, embrace them.
Psalm 91 In Action
During World War 2, British troops were trapped in Dunkirk, between the advancing Nazi forces and the English channel. C.B. Morelock, a war correspondent reported that a group of 400 men were exposed on the Dunkirk beach to enemy attack without cover. Not a single man died. Survivors reported that they were shouting Psalm 91 at the top of their lungs. (Reference: Psalm 91 Military Edition: God’s Shield of Protection by Peggy Joyce Ruth)
During World War 2, the German air force Luftwaffe bombed London. People took shelter and houses were levelled but amidst the rubble stood the house of an elderly lady who had safely slept through the air raid. Her trust was on the Lord’s protection and the promises in Psalm 91.
Secret of Protection is in the Position
Dwell in Hebrew is Yashab which means to sit, remain or dwell. Most High in Hebrew is Elyon and Almighty is Shaddai.
Position is Important for God: First, God sets you on high (Deuteronomy 28:1) and then God blesses you richly in every area (Deuteronomy 28:3-14)
Between Elyon & Shaddai is the secret place!
First Mentions of Elyon & Shaddai
Genesis 14:19: First mention of Elyon. Melchizedek, King of Salem (Jesus) brought out bread and wine (Holy Communion) and Abram responded with a tithe.
Genesis 15: Gospel in the stars. God showed Abram the gospel in the stars from Virgo (the virgin birth) to Leo (Lion of Judah). Abram believed and was “justified by faith.”
Genesis 16: Grace above law Genesis 16 is all about Sarah and Hagar. The bondwoman, Hagar (law) must submit to Sarah (grace). Abraham is faith and Sarah is grace.
Genesis 17:1: Almighty. The Lord revealed Himself as Almighty when Abram was 99 years old. When Abram could no longer rely on “human efforts”, God blessed him and made him fruitful. After you are justified by faith put law under grace and not grace under law!
Lord (Yahweh) and God (Elohim)
Creation in Genesis 1 does not mention Yahweh. Elohim is the Creator.
David declared the battle is Yahweh’s but Goliath was defeated so the world will know Elohim.
Yahweh brought the animals into Noah’s ark. Elohim shut the door.
Uzziah sought Yahweh and Elohim propered him.
Therefore, Yahweh is in a covenant relationship with man.
Jesus is Yahweh
– Yahweh (YHVH) “Yeshua HaNazarei Vemelekh HaYehudim” (Jesus of Nazareth King of the Jews)
– Jesus is willing and able to protect us but will not force it upon us (Matthew 23:37)
– Ask Jesus for protection. Only He can put us at the right place, at the right time.
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of Your Son. What a wonderful gift. Thank You that you never gave up on us even when we sinned. You could have started a new creation but You never forsook man. You loved all of us.
You love me and sent Your Son as my divine substitute. On that cross all my sins met its just punishment in the body of Christ. So today I can stand in the full light of your favour, knowing full well that You will never impute on me all the sins that were imputed on Christ.
Thank You Father, You raised Him from the dead without my sins. Jesus Christ is my Lord and Saviour, now and forever. In Jesus name, Amen!
Heavenly Father, this coming week, I thank You that You have gone before me, prepared the way for me and my family. You have removed the obstacles, closed some doors and opened some doors.
Thank You for making the crooked places straight. Heavenly Father, You are my refuge and my family’s. Our fortress, our hiding place. In You we trust. Surely all week You deliver my family and I from every deadly disease, from every sickness, from every danger, from accidents, from harm, from terror, from evil people, from all the powers of darkness, from all the powers of the evil one and You have crowned my family and I with divine favour and Your favour goes before us this day, this week and prepares the way. Thank You Father. In Jesus name, Amen!
